The first Swedish coins – Viking Age coins

The first Swedish coins were minted around AD 995, during the Viking Age. However, coin production in Sweden lasted only about 40 years before it came to a halt.

Roman Empire coins - the first coins in Sweden

Almost two thousand years ago, people brought coins to Scandinavia for the first time. The coins came from the Roman Empire and had travelled north along trade routes. This new form of money was small, durable and made trading easier.

What is inflation?

In the 1950s, an ice cream cone could cost 50 swedish öre. Today, the same ice cream cone costs 10 swedish kronor – an increase of 1,900 percent. What causes prices to rise? The answer is inflation.

What is money?

From necklaces, gold coins, and shells to a piece of paper or numbers on a screen. Money has existed in many different forms throughout history. But if people agree on it, almost anything can be used for payment.

The Lohe Hoard

The Lohe family was a well-known and wealthy trading and business family during the 17th and 18th centuries. At some point during the 18th century, a silver hoard belonging to the family was buried and then forgotten underground. After lying hidden for almost 200 years, the Lohe Hoard saw the light of day again in 1937.

Our collections

The collections of the Economy Museum are one of Sweden's oldest, and the first objects date from around 1572. The collections consist of 650,000 objects, of which 450,000 are coins from all over the world.

What is numismatics?

Numismatics is the study of coins and other means of payment, as well as medals. The Economy Museum – Royal Coin Cabinet is founded on numismatics, and the museum’s collection consists mostly of coins, banknotes, medals and various means of payment.
